Let’s put on a show! This program is a fast-paced intensive for young people ready to take the stage. In three weeks, students will work together to perform a 30-minute version of A Year with Frog and Toad.. While working on this musical, they will advance their acting, singing, and dancing skills while also learning more about production elements such as sets, props, costumes, and sound and light design. The performance will be on Friday, July 17th at 2:30pm on the Wheelock Family Theatre Mainstage.

About the show:

Creating the Triple Threat! In this program, students will develop musical theatre technique through an exploration of scenes, songs, and dance numbers from musicals, exposing students to the many different genres and styles of musicals. Utilizing the musical theatre skills of acting, singing, and dancing, this two-week exploration of Musical Theatre is perfect for beginner and advanced musical theatre students alike. The final sharing will be on Friday, July 10th at 2:30pm on the Wheelock Family Theatre Mainstage.

Rehearse and perform a one-act play in just 2 weeks! In this program, students will develop and expand the tools in their actors’ toolbox as they dive into the given circumstances of a piece, develop believable characters, make strong choices, and collaborate with an ensemble of fellow actors to get to the heart of a piece. The final performance will be on Friday, July 10th

Take to the stage! This program focuses on coordinating the instruments of voice and body to create dynamic musical characters. In this 3-week program, students will advance their acting, singing, and dancing skills while also learning the importance of community and the role of the ensemble in a production. Students will apply these skills to the rehearsal of the musical Honk, Jr. This program is open to anyone interested in deepening their musical theatre experience. Auditions for roles within the production will take place during the first week of the program.

Honk! JR. is a heartwarming celebration of being different that is sure to delight audiences of all ages with its sparkling wit, unique charm and memorable score. Witty and hilarious, but also deeply moving, Honk! JR. will treat your audiences to equal amounts of laughter and tears.

Let’s take this show on the road! This program gives experienced teen performers the opportunity to rehearse, tour, and perform a show for the most discerning of audiences, children! For the first two weeks, actors rehearse the musical Winnie the Pooh, and then take the show on tour, performing for children and their families at The Boston Children’s Museum. This program will challenge experienced actors to create performances that not only entertain but also educate the next generation of theatregoers. Students will learn firsthand what it takes to create a traveling theatre piece. Weeks 1 and 2 will take place at Wheelock Family Theatre. Week 3 will take place at the Boston Children’s Museum (2 performances daily).

Bring a show to life from concept to execution. This program is a dynamic immersion in the theatre crafts that are vital to professional stage productions. This course balances theory with practical experience through the study of scenic, prop, costume, lighting, and sound design. Students will work with WFT’s professional technical staff during this three-week intensive, designing and building technical elements for the Musical Theatre Production of Honk, JR. Work will be shared at the performance of the production on Thursday, July 16th

Sondheim’s songs are mini-plays set to music. In this master class, students will explore how to connect lyrics, emotion, and character to create powerful, authentic performances that go beyond just singing the notes. This Masterclass focuses on character choices, emotional beats, vocal dynamics, and clear storytelling to help students perform musical theatre songs with confidence and intention.

In this two-week interdisciplinary theatre arts program, students will use their creative imaginations to enter and experience Wizarding Worlds.. Through story drama, students will use their bodies, voices, and imaginations to create big, bold characters such as wizards, dragons, and magical creatures. Through exploring the essential elements of a story, students will collaboratively create an original play set in a wizarding world of their devising. Finally, artistic imaginations will come out to play as students design and create simple props, costumes, and scenery to complete their magical world.

A week of creative play! Inspired by well-loved storybooks, students will work together and use their imaginations, bodies, and voices while traveling inside their favorite storybooks. The day will be spent engaging in creative drama and movement as well as hands-on visual arts projects connected to the stories of the week.

What does “real” acting look like today? This master class introduces students to contemporary approaches that emphasize truth, intention, and authentic human behavior. Dive into physical, vocal, and text analysis techniques used in college and professional actor training.

Through creative movement, students will explore different ways of moving in a celebration of self-expression. In our Music Movers classes, dancing to the beat of your own drum is encouraged!

From classic Broadway to modern hits, this master class dives into iconic choreography that has shaped musical theatre. Students will focus on style, precision, and performance while learning how movement, musicality, and intention work together to create memorable performances.

About the show: Bring the African savanna to life on your stage with Simba, Rafiki and an unforgettable cast of characters as they journey from Pride Rock to the jungle and back again in this inspiring, coming-of-age tale. The Lion King KIDS features classic songs from the Broadway musical and animated feature film, including “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King,” “He Lives in You,” and “Hakuna Matata.”

About the Play:
The worlds of Oz and Wonderland collide in this fantastically fun romp, cleverly and carefully adapted from the works of L. Frank Baum and Lewis Carroll.

Create a musical from start to stage! Students will write, compose, and perform their own songs and scenes in this exciting two-week theatre experience. Students will learn the building blocks of musical theatre as they develop skills in playwriting, songwriting, and performance, culminating in an original musical showcase that highlights their creativity and teamwork. There will be a final sharing on Friday, August 7th.

This program is designed for teens in high school with prior musical theatre training and performance experience who are committed to deepening their skills as actors, singers, and dancers. Through voice, dance, and character work, students will bring the musical production to life while also deepening their knowledge and understanding of their craft. ALL SHOOK UP is a hilarious and heartfelt musical, loosely based on Shakespeare’s TWELFTH NIGHT. It’s 1955, and into a square little town rides a guitar-playing young man who changes everything and everyone he meets. Featuring mega hits from the beloved Elvis® catalogue, this musical fantasy will have you jumpin’ out of your blue suede shoes with such classics as “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “Don’t Be Cruel.”

Explore how stories are created from the ground up. In this master class, students will experiment with playwriting and devised theatre techniques to generate original material through collaboration, imagination, and exploration.

A week of creative play! Inspired by well-loved storybooks, students will work together and use their imaginations, bodies, and voices while traveling inside their favorite storybooks. The day will be spent engaging in creative drama and movement as well as hands-on visual arts projects connected to the stories of the week.

Our longest-running advanced acting experience is back for its 17th summer. This program is designed for teens in high school with prior training and performance experience who are committed to deepening their acting skills and knowledge of the craft. Through challenging exercises in vocal, movement, and character work and exploration of scenes from outstanding plays, students will experience the actor’s process in depth, culminating in an acting showcase on the final day of the program. Join the dozens of teens who have experienced and benefited from this intensive, many of whom have gone on to attend top acting and theatre programs around the country. The performance will be on Friday, August 14th at 7:00pm in the Studio One at the College of Fine Arts at Boston University.

Story Explorers embark on a new adventure each week! Through creative movement, imagination, and hands-on art activities, students jump into the world of each story and set sail on this interactive theatre experience specially designed for our youngest students. As the seasons change, we'll celebrate all the magic of fall, crunching through colorful leaves, visiting pumpkin patches, meeting woodland creatures, and discovering the wonders of autumn through stories, songs, and dramatic play. A final sharing for family and friends will take place on the last day of class.

A fun and physical introduction to the fundamental building blocks of drama (body, voice, mind, and imagination). Using theatre games, improvisation, story dramatization, and creative movement, students will step into the shoes of larger-than-life characters and discover the joy of making bold acting choices. Whether creating daring adventurers, mischievous tricksters, magical creatures, or unforgettable originals, students will build confidence, creativity, and collaboration as they bring stories to life. A final sharing for family and friends will take place on the last day of class.

The Actor’s Toolbox engages students in the creative process and supports their growth as actors, individually and in ensemble. Throughout the class sessions, participants will develop and explore the fundamentals of performance (body, voice, mind, and imagination) by exploring technique, ensemble building, movement, voice, and working with basic text. We recommend students take this class more than once to continue stocking their toolbox and keeping their tools sharp! A final presentation for family and friends will take place on the last day of class.

Shakespeare wasn't meant to be read quietly at a desk—it was meant to be performed! In this active, engaging class, students will unlock the language, stories, and characters of Shakespeare through theatre games, scene work, movement, and performance. Together we'll decode the text, discover what the characters really mean, and bring Shakespeare's words to life with confidence, creativity, and bold acting choices. Whether you're new to Shakespeare or already a fan, you'll leave with the tools to make the Bard feel surprisingly approachable. A final sharing for family and friends will take place on the last day of class.

A taste of musical theatre for young movers and shakers! Inspired by Spookley the Square Pumpkin, students will sing, dance, and act their way through a joyful musical theatre adventure celebrating kindness, friendship, and the courage to be yourself. They'll twist and shout with favorites like the "Transylvania Twist" while learning how to "tell the story" through song, movement, and acting. Through music and movement activities, theatre games, improvisation, and storytelling, young performers will create musical moments of their own as they build confidence, creativity, and collaboration. A final sharing for family and friends will take place on the last day of class.

Explores the fundamentals of musical theatre. Participants will develop characters within the context of a musical scene, explore various musical styles, and develop songs, scenes, and numbers from different musicals. Through solo, small-group, and ensemble work, students will learn how to transition from scene to song, creating a believable shift that allows the audience to follow a character’s journey. A final presentation for family and friends will take place on the last day of class.

Our Playmakers Performance Workshop program offers students the opportunity to further develop their actor’s tools as they apply them to a scripted piece. While unpacking the scenes from the play, students will explore the C.R.O.W.S ( characters, relationships, objectives, when/when (setting), and struggles (conflict)) of the story and make intentional choices about how to bring the characters and situations in the play to life. With minimal props/ costume pieces, this performance workshop puts a spotlight on the creative tools of the actor. A performance for Family and Friends will take place on the WFT stage on December 12.

About the Play: When insecure, curious Alice stumbles onto a troupe of traveling players, her afternoon stroll takes a detour into the wild and whimsical world that is Wonderland. As she literally follows her heart through Lewis Carroll's timelessly mad land, she discovers the joy of nonsense and the power of her own voice.
