Volunteer Role Categories
Theatre Usher Volunteer
Join Wheelock Family Theatre’s dynamic front of house team as a theatre usher! Ushers are vital to the success of our productions, and ensure we’re able to provide audiences with the highest quality experience possible. Some theatre usher duties may include:
- Greet patrons and assist in locating their seats within the theatre.
- Help guests locate exits and amenities such as restrooms and concession areas.
- Assist guests with limited mobility or other access needs to and from their seats.
- Individuals with previous experience or an interest in supporting patrons with disabilities may have the opportunity to work during an Access Performance or take on additional duties in this area.
- Ensure aisles, walkways, and designated seating areas are clear, clean, and safe
Marketing & Communications Volunteer
Support Wheelock Family Theatre’s marketing & communications efforts as a member of our volunteer team. This volunteer marketing & communications role will primarily be responsible for disseminating information about our productions, classes, and programs to communities throughout Greater Boston. Volunteer duties may include:
- Hanging posters at local businesses in and around the Boston area.
- Support onsite and offsite marketing events such as opening nights, summer camp fairs, and other community events to increase awareness around Wheelock Family Theatre and its programs.
- Serving as a social media ambassador for Wheelock Family Theatre by engaging with and brainstorming social media content.
Backstage & Technical Theatre Volunteer Crew
Be part of the process of bringing our professional and teen ensemble productions to life as a member of our volunteer backstage and technical theatre crew. Volunteers with varying levels of experience in technical theatre will work alongside Wheelock Family theatre’s professional technical theatre staff to bring our productions to life. Backstage and technical volunteer duties may include:
- Assist with bringing Wheelock Family Theatre’s productions to life in one or more of the following areas: set, costumes, lights, sounds, props.
- Those with the appropriate previous experience and expressed interest may be assigned more complex work.
- Assist with theatre maintenance projects (organizing prop inventory, cleaning costume stock, painting the stage floor).
Administrative Operations Volunteer Support Staff
Assist in the essential day-to-day work of Wheelock Family Theatre as a member of our administrative operations staff. Volunteers will work closely with our theatre’s professional staff in completing key tasks that keep the organization running. Volunteer duties may include:
- Assist with promotional and informational mailing efforts to Wheelock Family Theatre’s patrons and donors.
- Supporting office functions such as copying, scanning, and filing.
- Answer phones, respond to ticket inquiries, and support additional box office duties
Education Program Volunteer Support Staff
Support Wheelock Family Theatre’s education program as a member of the education program support staff. Volunteer education staff members will provide administrative and classroom support for Wheelock Family theatre’s year-round theatre education classes and programs. Volunteer education Staff member duties may include:
- Prepare upcoming class materials by printing/copying scripts, organizing equipment and class tools , and setting up classroom spaces.
- Assist in weekend, school vacation week, and summer classrooms as a volunteer teacher’s aide.
- Any individual working with children will need to complete a CORI background check.
Frequently Asked Questions
Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. Anyone who is volunteering to work with children will need to complete a CORI background check. There may be opportunities for volunteers younger than 16 to participate in projects. Please sign-up for our volunteer mailing list to learn more about these opportunities!
Volunteer opportunities are based on the theatre’s needs and will be shared monthly to members of our mailing list via email.
Volunteer commitments can range from a couple of hours to a handful of days over the course of the run of a production, class, or program.
